Back to DoFollow

by beale, under Blogroll, BluFrog Energy, Rants and Raves

The Blu Frog contests are drawing to a close, You are all going to check out “TheFosters” (you ARE, aren’t you?), and the week is drawing to a close. So for today’s post, I thought I’d give a little info on Going back to “dofollow”.

First, there are couple of good places to read about the whole nofollow frenzy and the proper way to get ping backs and back links. The first I recommend is here:

Comment Spamming Do Follow Blogs 101

Despite the title, the post is NOT about learning how to comment spam. On the contray, it is about learning the proper way to build relationships with other bloggers. It is a good article and well worth your time and effort to read.

Do Follow Bloggers

This is a cool site from an equally cool woman named Trisha. She and many other bloggers (like yours truly) are going back to do follow on their blogs. She has some really cool stuff. Go read her.

Now, About this whole “Oh my god… SPAMMERS… quick turn everything to NoFollow. NOW NOW NOW… lock it down lock it down” …

I know that sounds a little dramatic. But it really does seem to be the way most bloggers are reacting to the spam bots. Well, to make this a little new age… “Its ok… I understand your feelings…You have every right to feel that way.”

Now back to reality…get away from all the touchy feelly crap.

Remember a few years ago (about 10 actually) when the internet went crazy over email spam? Everyone jumped on the bandwagon like some kind of vigilante mob out for blood. Congress even enacted knee jerk legislation in response to the fanactical “Kill all SPam” movement”. If I recall, there were even people sent to prison for it. Fast forward to today? Is email spam that much of a problem? No. Was it the legislation that did it? No.

What cut spam down to its current “nusance” status is directly attributable to Spam Filters. Once the big email providers started implementing REAL spam filters. The rest of the technology world followed suit. Now all email providers and AVP software has spam filters incorporated into their software.

Here we are now into the world of Blogging. Comment spam from spam bots, in the pursuit of link juice, has gotten pretty bad. But has it gotten so bad that WP and the other Blogging software companies have to turn all of their upgrades to NoFollow by default? Apparently so.

This is so much knee jerk reaction that it is almost funny.

Any blogger can cut down their comment spam to almost NOTHING if they would just implement a few of the comment spam filter plug ins available for any Blogger Software… they all have them and the number of them is to large to list here.

Personally, I recommend TanTan Noodles (thanks SEOTuscon!). I have had a few spam comments get through, but now where near enough to go to NoFollow. (more relevant comments = updated content=better search ranking).

But isn’t this the way it always works? Someone “creates” a problem. The world goes crazy in anger over it. Then the same people that said it was a problem in the first place have the answer to the problem they created….. oh wait that’s MARKETING 101!!!

Later Tadpoles!!
